"Lerderderg"  .  Acrylic on Canvas  .  2025

The evening sunset over Lerderderg Gorge in Victoria, seen through the jagged silhouettes of gum trees, is a quiet kind of awe - something ancient and unspoken.

The sky shifts into a deep, burning palette of red-orange, where molten amber bleeds into rusted crimson, streaked with lingering apricot gold.

These colours stretch across the horizon like slow-moving fire, pooling in the folds of the gorge below. It’s a light that feels both fierce and fading - intense but softening with every passing minute.

The gum trees stand in stark contrast - dark and statuesque - their wiry branches tangled like ink drawings against the fire-glow sky.

You can smell the dry eucalyptus in the cooling air, sharp and earthy, as the last heat of the day lifts from the rocks.

There’s a stillness, broken only by the faint rustle of leaves or the distant call of a magpie settling in. The gorge itself - ancient, carved, enduring - catches the light in dusky layers, its edges blushed with shadow and ember.

In that moment, everything feels suspended: time slows, colours deepen, and the land breathes under the watch of the falling sun.
